Maeve
Age: 13 +/- (2026) Birth Date: Unknown
Breed/Sex: Dutch Harness Mare
Size: 17 Hands, Approximately 1500 pounds
About Me: Maeve came to Hay Burr Inn on April 25, 2024 with Gandalf. She is a Dutch harness horse who pulled a buggy for an Amish family. This is a unique breed.
Maeve arrived at HBI as an auction intercept. This means she was taken from her farm to a holding place to be networked for a home before she was sent to auction. As an auction horse she most likely would have not gone to slaughter but taken in by a rescue or private buyer. Because HBI intercepted her she did not go through the trauma of auction houses. If she didn't sell at one she would have gone to another in a cycle until she finally was helped. We are glad to have helped her at the beginning.
So Maeve did arrive at HBI severely emaciated with a bit of dropped rear fetlocks. This occurs from being driven quickly on paved roads and it is sometimes genetic. Maeve has also evidence of having foals in the past. Maeve arrived with roads shoes and pads. We are working with her to toughen her hooves to go barefoot. She came to us also is in need of vaccinations, teeth floating, and being handled gently.
Maeve will not be used for breeding though there are few dutch harness horses in the US. Maeve will have a wonderful retirement and a bit of retraining. She will learn to be a relaxed horse with love and gentle care. Her future looks lovely.
Needs Sponsor: Maeve is currently looking for a kind soul who is willing to make a monthly gift towards her continuous care. Learn more about our sponsorship program.
Nahima
Age: 29 +/- (2026) Birth Date: Unknown
Breed/Sex: Pony of America (POA) Mare
Size: Approximately 800 pounds
About Me: Nahima came to Hay Burr Inn on May 24, 2024 with Sakina. NECCOG took control of this large herd due to neglect and starvation. As always some horses were worse than others. After a few months the horses were in need of forever homes. NECCOG reached out to HBI a few days after we had taken in Maeve and Gandalf. Maeve and Gandalf were in quarantine. So we said we could help after the horses in quarantine we're finished By that time only a few horses were left.
Nahima is a beautiful grey with white appaloosa colored mare. A smaller, but robust built pony. Nahima is a sassy POA, an American breed relatively new. (1954) Pony of America is usually appaloosa in coloring. Appaloosa is one of the foundation stock of this breed, others are Shetland and the Quarter horse.
Nahima is one of the pair bond we took in. The reason the bond couldn’t be separated is because Nahima is blind and relied on Sakina to get around safely. Since Sakina has passed, Nahima has now bonded with Bessie, our 1st mule! Nahima also relies on her senses other than sight to get around.
The name Nahima is Hopi native American for a mystic. Or someone who sees beyond what is in our eyesight, ahima. Reflecting spiritual and mystical beliefs of the Hopi people who have a rich tradition of connection with the divine and seeking inner enlightenment As Nahima is appaloosa, a native American bred horse we believe this is fitting in many ways.
Needs Sponsor: Nahima currently has 1 sponsors. The monthly donation takes multiple sponsors to cover her care. If you are a kind soul who is willing to make a monthly gift towards her continuous care, click on the button to sponsor.
