Our youth barn care mentors grow in confidence, knowledge and take memories with them onto their next chapters.
Role Description
Youth Barn Care Mentors are responsible for mentoring their peers in the care of the equines at Hay Burr Inn Rescue & Sanctuary. To be a barn care mentor, the individual must be knowledgeable and competent in many areas concerning the equine and people.
Responsibilities
Hands-On Mentorship & Technical Training
Feeding Operations: Guide volunteers through the rescue's strict feeding procedures, ensuring equines are fed accurately according to their specific dietary needs and that hay nets are filled and distributed correctly.
Barn & Stall Upkeep: Train volunteers to maintain clean, safe stalls and outdoor areas free of cobwebs and debris, ensuring proper bedding levels and pristine water buckets.
Core Equine Care: Educate volunteers in proper daily grooming techniques (coat, mane, tail, and hoof checks) and the correct sizing and application of blankets and fly gear.
Health Tracking: Assist volunteers in mastering baseline vitals tracking, ensuring health signs are recorded accurately on a monthly basis.
Feedback Receptance: Remain adaptive and receptive to immediate, real-time safety overrides or feedback from the Volunteer Trainer or Barn Manager to guarantee on-site safety.
Community Advocacy: Actively participate in and advocate for the rescue’s equines at fundraisers and public events, always aligning actions with the core mission of Hay Burr Inn Rescue & Sanctuary.

On-Site Training
How to Become a
Barn Care Mentor
An active youth volunteer within the program.
Must be between 14 to 18 years of age.
Must put in at least 3 chore shifts each week and help with fundraisers.
Participating in 1 hour a week in projects in addition to chore hours.
Help set up, participate, and break down for fundraisers.
Attend mandatory quarterly continuing education meetings.
Highly encourage to become active in a committee.
Nominated by Hay Burr Inn Corp Board Members.
